Stakeholder Consultation on Indian Shipbuilding Technology Centre Held at IMU Vizag on 24 June 2025

IMU hosted a dynamic Stakeholder Consultation Session to chart the roadmap for the proposed Indian Shipbuilding Technology Centre (ISTC) at its Vizag campus, with active participation from government leaders, industry experts, academia, and global technology partners. The Vice Chancellor of IMU highlighted the strategic importance of shipbuilding and shipbreaking, calling for a renewed focus on NSDRC’s role in maritime R&D, while Prof. K.M. Shivakholundu articulated ISTC’s vision by referencing global best practices. Shri Rajesh Kumar Sinha, IAS, Special Secretary, MoPSW, aligned ISTC with national initiatives such as MIV 2030, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, and MAKV 2047, underlining the urgent need to revive India’s shipbuilding sector. Sri Venkatapati S, IAS, Joint Secretary, MoPSW, emphasized the need for collaboration, testing infrastructure, and knowledge sharing to achieve transformative growth in maritime technology. Industry leaders from GRSE, Hindustan Shipyard, Cochin Shipyard, Swan Shipyard, and DG Shipping put forth actionable suggestions, including national design libraries, digital Centres of Excellence, SaaS-based design tools, automation, skilling, and a strengthened innovation ecosystem. International tech partners such as ANSYS, NAPA, HSVA, and SEDS pledged support for ISTC through collaboration in R&D, advanced testing, digital innovation, and sustainable ship design. Positioned as a collaborator, coordinator, and enabler, ISTC is set to emerge as a national hub for ship design innovation, certification, training, and maritime technology leadership.
