An underwater seabed survey was conducted during 1st week of Sep,2022 by the Indian Maritime University(IMU) and National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT), as part of Tamil Nadu State Government Archaeology department’s offshore reconnaissance initiative at the mouth of Thamirabarani river in the sea between Tuticorin and Thiruchendur. The objective of the survey was to explore the existence of any artefacts, antique objects, ship wreckage or any structure and other evidence related to the ancient Tamil Sangam period.

During the shore area field research in Oct, 2022 which was conducted between Thiruchendur and Veerapandian Pattinam, the Centre for Archaeology Research, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli identified an ancient 200 metre long wall. The wall is located at the distance of approximately 10km south of the historical Korkai port area. Korkai Port was the principal centre of trade/port in the Pandian Kingdom. The finding is considered to be a significant contribution to the Porunai (Thamirabarani) river valley civilization explorations.

The next underwater survey in this area is planned to begin in December 2022. This is being undertaken by the Tamil Nadu State Government Archaeology department in association with IMU and NIOT.
